Lesson Plan - 8th Grade Math

MATH  LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Learning Goal/Outcomes:

·         I can solve an equation involving two variables.
·         I can prove that if a=b and c=d, then a+c=b+d
·         I understand why this method of equation solving (addition) works.

Content Standard:

Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.C.8.A

Lesson Content will be displayed on the SmartBoard and the teacher will show the problem-solving steps on the SmartBoard.

Skills:

Logical problem-solving
Expressing one variable in terms of another

Warm-Up (5-10m)

A solo dice game is played where, on each turn, a normal pair of dice is rolled. The score is calculated by taking the product, rather than the sum, of the two numbers shown on the dice.
On a particular game, the score for the second roll is five more than the score for the first; the score for the third roll is six less than that of the second; the score for the fourth roll is eleven more than that of the third; and the score for the fifth roll is eight less than that of the fourth. What was the score for each of these five throws?
We know: the products possible, the equations (show)

Introduction  (30 m)

Use previous lesson material – Fred lost 4 pounds and now he weighed 33 pounds.  How much did he weigh?
Rat and Mouse age problem.
Show how to write the equations.
Show how to add them.
Prove why adding them is OK

Assessment: (5 min)

Pass out cards with the book problem.  Ask for answers and explanations.

Differentiate: (10 -15 min)

Pass out Pink Practice cards to those who need more work with the basic concept.  (Student didn’t get it at all)
Pass out Blue Practice cards to those who understood the basic concept but needs more practice of getting to the right solution.  (Student got the problem right without a clear understanding of why)
Pass out Yellow Practice cards to those who understood the lesson and excelled.

Pink Card:
I have two books on my shelf.  The one about Donkey Kong is 50 years older than the one about Halo.  In 40 years from now, the one about Donkey Kong will be twice as old as the one about Nelson.
Blue Card:
43x+6y=87
20x-2y=74
And
80x+2y=9
39x-3y=11
Yellow Card:
Belinda, Fred’s secretary put her Diary of Work on the whiteboard in her office.
20 job offer letters answered
11 interview request letters answered
Time spent: 830 minutes
28 job offer letters answered.
33 interview request letters answered.
Time spent 1690 minutes

What do you know about how long Belinda takes to answer each job offer?

How would this help you understand why six year old Fred was drafted into the army?

Follow up to this lesson will occur over subsequent dats.
